About The Center:

The Spatial and Regional Development Research Center (SPARD) was founded in January, 2008, as Riga Technical University structural unit.

The goals of the center:

The Spatial and Regional Development Research Center (SPARD) was founded with strategic aim to integrate and co-ordinate the researches in area of spatial planning and regional development in Latvia and Baltic states regarding the policies of European Union. The scientific activities are based on three keystones: system approach, sustainable development and quality of life.

SPARD has legal status and enjoys administrative and economic independence. From the beginning of its operation, the Centre has sought innovative fields of research relevant to the Latvian scientific community. The Centre has undertaken applied research projects on urban policy and planning, sustainable development, environmental management, governance, conflict resolution and dynamic modeling – all of which are areas of research seriously underdeveloped within Latvia.

The research team of SPARD consists of several high quality specialists from related sciences: planning, architecture, transport engineering, economy, sociology, ecology, management, system modeling.

The structure of the center:

  • Department of analysis of sustainable regional development;
  • Laboratory of spatial planning and modeling;
  • Division of advanced education of spatial planning.
